Prevention
There is currently no specific treatment for dengue fever, therefore, in order to prevent the further spread of the virus, people need to break the cycle of transmission. Currently, in Oxitech, Oxford, scientists are working to prevent the breeding of the female Aedes mosquito by preventing the birth of its offspring. Hadyn Perry, a member of this team states, "Here at Oxitech, fundamentally, we are working with a technology that allows us to cause a death in the offspring of the next generation." (Wellcome Trust)
People are constantly reminded to keep Dengue Fever away from their homes through public announcements and advertisements that encourage the adaption of routine systems that include the checking of breeding spots for mosquitoes. A newborn mosquito is called a larvae, and larvae stay inside water until they have matured and are ready to start their life as a mosquito. This means that the Aedes mosquito breeds through water. To limit mosquito breeding, people are advised to check for places where water accumulation is possible, to limit mosquito breeding and thereby the spread of Dengue Fever. People should ensure that they repair defective roof gutters and flower pot plates. ("All about Dengue") The general population is advised to further adapt methods to limit mosquito breeding, and can refer to government websites such as http://www.dengue.gov.sg/ for further information.
